ЗВУКИ ВЗЛОМА \ the SOUND of HACK
Russian Sound Art Showcase (RSAS) – is a standardized exhibition of multi-channel works of Russian sound artists, who are currently active in scene of mainly Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. Most of them are centered around the SoundArtist.ru ( aka SA)) ) community. The first version of RSAS was shown in 2015 at Ars Electronica festival in Linz Austria. It became the first ever collective exhibition of Russian sound artists abroad. The RSAS NY – is the second one.

This time our show is entitled “ZVUKI VZLOMA” (eng. “The Sound of Hack”).
On the first stages of it’s forming – the SA))-community had a distinctive attraction to the aesthetic of “d-i-y” and “music hacking”.
So historically, a lot of young Russian sound artists’s practice was derived from this approach. From pirated software to self-developed interfaces and instruments then evolutionary raised into interactive installations and more. Including educational activities, stimulating next generations to learn coding and electronics.
You will listen to the works of artists, who started their way more than 20 years ago, and were a vital part of Theremin Center for Electroacoustic Music of Moscow State Conservatory, as well as works of the last generation of Russian sound explorers, who has just graduated from the course at Moscow Sound Art Studio (SA))_studio).
The topic of the show is also a satire on a narrative of Russian hacking and meddling with American technical and social systems. Come to the space of RSAS and let yourself be hacked with sound. We mean it.

Pterygio (2012)
microtonal composition with the semitone multiplier x1.08
The piece was composed for 22 channel surround system where every particular tone must be produced from the dedicated loudspeaker. It combines several composing technics like minimalism, musique concrete, allophonic slices and some others.

Yulia Glukhova
Yulia was born in 1989, based in Moscow. Graduated VGIK (Russian film school) sound department in 2012,
now working as freelance sound designer for movies, also doing personal projects
connected to experimental music, sound art, technological art and field-recording.

Hack O’Tone (2019)
rendered from generative algorithm; precomposed There was a seminar with my students, where we discussed the potential of generative algorithms for creating music. Suddenly the electricity switched off. When the power supply was restored, the point of view of many participants changed. The work represents the development of student’s ideas and the abrupt gap in sensory experience, which led to a rethinking of the role of generative algorithms in music creation.

Boris Shershenkov
Engineer and sound artist, media archaeologist and musical instrument designer from Saint-Petersburg.
He is engaged in a variety of activities in the field of experimental electronic music and known as the author of sound installations and audiovisual performances and as curator of concert programs, exhibitions and educational projects.
As a musician he actively works in the areas of live electronics and electroacoustic improvisation, both solo and in collaborations with local and foreign musicians. Participant of numerous festivals and concerts of experimental and electronic music.”

Phonotron Alpha (2018)
8-channel acousmatic composition played on Phonotron Alpha no-input circuit Documentation of the Alpha model phonon synchrotron operation. Phonon synchrotron is a closed system of audio processors, representing a single oscillator and it is used to search and identify in a sound signal elementary quanta of acoustic oscillations – phonons. The signals are recording simultaneously from eight different points of the system, each of which corresponds to a separate audio track.

Anastasiya Alekhina
An artist from Moscow. Born in 1989. Graduating from the Laboratory of Media Performance (MOMMA) and Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia (faculty of New Media Art). She works in technological genres of art, creating media installations, wearable devices and electronic musical instruments. Works with sound in experimental directions.

Multichannel piece based on using self-made analog instruments, computer algorithm, records of voice and found sounds with ASMR effects. The composition explores the ASMR phenomenon and seeks to combine elements of spatial sounds with reference to hacking (in all senses of the word) and the effect of the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.

Cold treatment (2018)
Multichannel piece based on transformed field recordings: mainly electromagnetic interference of various electronic control panels Any system needs to be cooled. Plunging into the inner sound of the world of machines and various technological devices, I am inspired by the timbral colors and rhythm formation within the systems. The composition is based on prepared field recordings of the disc installation process, operation of control panels, activation of coolers, etc.

Sergey Kostyrko
Sergey Kostyrko is an Associate Professor of St. Petersburg State University with an expertise in solid mechanics. He is also active as a musician and sound artist. His recent interests focus on the design of sound algorithms based on techniques of mathematical and physical modelling as well as on the data sonification principles. As a musician, he works in the area of improvisational and noise music.

Defragmentation (2018)
Octophonic electroacoustic fixed-media piece based on various sound processing and generation algorithms. Duration: 10:56. St. Petersburg, Russia. 2018 Human feeling of time depends on many factors: environment, age, condition and others. This work is a sound exploration of time and space, based on the principle of fragmentation and comparison of the duration, intensity and timbral qualities of various sound objects. Like in a computer process of defragmentation, which operates with the disk memory, the author concatenates small citates from his own previous works into a new whole. This stochastic piece is created using digital sound processing algorithms, developed by the author during the past few years.

Alexander Senko was born in Moscow, Russia. Graduated from Gnesins Institute as a sound engineer. Secret transmissions (2019)

Using the microphones and speakers that come standard in many of today’s laptop computers and mobile devices, hackers can secretly transmit and receive data using high-frequency audio signals that are mostly inaudible to human ears.
Michael Hanspach and Michael Goetz, researchers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing, and Ergonomics, recently performed a proof-of-concept experiment that showed that covert acoustical networking, a technique which had been hypothesized but considered improbable by most experts, is indeed possible.
Importantly, the researchers were able to emit and record the ultrasonic and near-ultrasonic frequencies, which cannot be detected by humans, using the sound processor, speakers and microphone that came standard with the laptops.”” Inside Science.

“Secret transmissions” is an audio piece which exposes secret audio signals through shifting their frequency from ultrasonic to hearing range.

Yerofeyev
Ivan Erofeev is a Moscow-based artist. His releases on French, Dutch, Canadian, and Russian labels under the alias Aleph are diverse in sound, incorporating elements of IDM, ambient, and techno. Ivan released two vinyl EPs under his own name in 2017-18, one on GOST Zvuk sub-label INSTRUMENT and another with Resonance Moscow. Now he studying Sonology in the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and work with programming languages like SuperCollider, Max/MSP, CDP with digital synthesis, building algorythmiс compositions and work with recordings. In free time he playing on drums and do sound design.

an 8 channel sonification of the magnetic fields in data center (server room) which is never been hacked yet.
The main idea is my very presence in this place, as this is an absolutely closed object, manifesting itself as the most secure super-modern data center with an increased level of security. Unhackable, but i am in. The name of my work is Virgin – like a correlation with Immaculate Conception. i took a mic for electromagnetic field recordings n walked through a huge server room of a very well known n strictly closed data center (can’t say the name of it on public).

Masha Molokova
Born in Izhevsk in 1993. Lives in Moscow (Russia).
Masha Molokova specializes in printmaking, photography, video, installation, sound art, and teaching contemporary art. Masha’s artistic interest is focused on exploring the feeling of “time” in various states: historical, human, physical, and medial through visual and sound images. Current projects are focused on sound installations and performances in which unusual sound and body contexts appear.

Affective meditation(2018)
The composition uses sounds recorded during sound meditation; sounds of fear processes. The sounds scattered on 8 channels are developed in space, creating at the same time unstable and safe sensation.
Meditation is a process where you focus on one thing very much. You are trying to hack your brain, to become proportionate, harmonious, calm, mindfullness. After several sessions of meditation, you suddenly feel that you have been hacked – you are lost, depressed, in your head there is a complete mess.
The more you strive for self-development, the faster it flows from your hands, it becomes elusive. In such a meditative pursuit, sounds bite you.
The score in this case is the transfer of experience into the structure of the composition. Here lies the holistic experience of the transformation of fear and instability. A piece of art as a therapy and at the same time a knock down, which does not allow is in nirvana. After relaxation comes irritation.

Сarpet (2017)
Field recordings at the bell tower (55.771943, 37.632005). Modular synthesis. Transitions between different music-forming levels. The power of prayer. Work dedicated to Easter. In the first week after Orthodox Easter, anyone can go to the bell tower and try himself as a toller (many of the bell towers are open to the public these days). The 7-channel sound canvas explores the possibilities of interaction between human created and divine uncreated energies. The name of the composition reflects the property of the carpet to absorb sound waves and retain heat, as well as the requirement of constant care for them.
